The Pleasures And Pitfalls Of Keyless Entry

Thinking about buying a car or a front door lock that has keyless entry? While this is certainly a high-tech and convenient option for your car or home, it is not without its pitfalls, too. Here are some of the pleasures and pitfalls of keyless entry from the viewpoint of a locksmith.

Pitfalls

1 - Programming Keys

Every time you have to replace the dead battery inside the key fob, you have to reprogram the fob. It will not automatically recognize that you are attempting to open a locked door nearby until the programming is complete. If you are locked out of your vehicle and the battery in the fob dies, your only recourse is to call a locksmith, explain what has happened, request help, and wait for the locksmith to show up, replace the battery, and program the "keys" for you so that you can regain entry to your home or car.

2 - Buttons on the Fob Break

You may not have experienced this yet, but sometimes buttons on these programmed key fobs break. The result is that the fob sometimes activates an alarm system you did not intend to activate, or the fob locks you out of the vehicle even though you put the keys down inside the vehicle and have not touched the fob since. A locksmith can bring a replacement fob, program it to your car's or door's lock, and then open things up for you so that you can retrieve the keys and let the locksmith fix the problem.

Pleasures

1 - You Never Need to Use a Key Again

With the exception of a rare emergency, you really never need to use a key again. In fact, most keyless doors on cars and keyless locks on homes have you punch in a code or use a programmed key fob to unlock the doors. The fobs work within six to eight feet of the door, depending on the sensitivity of the lock and the charge of the battery inside the fob.

2 - Greater Safety Within Range of Your Door

If you have ever found yourself fumbling with keys in a darkened parking lot, you know the sense of panic you can feel at that exact moment. You are trying to get your car door open, but you cannot see the keys with so little light. Likewise, trying to open your home's front door with little light while carrying groceries at night is a nightmare. Instead, the key fob for the keyless entry lock opens your door from a short distance away, allowing you to gain access the minute you reach for the door handle.
